About Caustic3

So by now you've probably realized that Caustic 3 is a music creation platform. It lets you build your own beats, patterns, even entire songs using the variety of built-in synthesizers, samples that you have loaded, or a combination of both. Having a master's degree in music composition isn't needed in order to use the app effectively. In fact, after a little knob tweaking and experimenting with the stock instrument presets, we managed to put together some sweet tunes in a matter of minutes. Past experience with similar software or real synthesizers, however, helps a lot. So does consulting with the app's user manual, or watching the Caustic 3 guides and tutorials on YouTube. Newbies, on the other hand, may get confused, and probably even turned off by the dozens of knobs, switches, and buttons scattered across the user interface.

Run iPad Apps with IPadian Emulatar in Windows PC

Ipadian iOS emulators for Windows allow you to run your favorite iOS apps on your Windows computer. Isn't cool to have your iPad apps run on the rival Windows machines? Yes, that is possible with the emulators. Just like the Android emulators like Genymotion make it possible to run Android apps on Windows, you can use the iOS emulators to achieve the same purpose.

However, iOS and Windows have far different features that will make it impossible for any emulators give a true iOS experience on a Windows PC. A true emulator should be able to run all iOS apps on a Windows computer but in reality, there is no single emulator exists that achieves this.

What is an emulator

An emulator is a program that duplicates the functions and features of one computer system [operating system] on another computer system. An Android emulator for Windows will allow you to duplicate the Android features on a Windows computer and an iOS emulator for PC will allow you to duplicate features of iOS in a Windows computer. No emulators are perfect and no emulator can bring all features of the original OS to another OS.

iPadian - an iOS UI emulator for Windows PC

iPadian is one of the popular apps that bring iOS user interface to Microsoft Windows, giving an iPad kind of feeling for your PC. The beauty of this system is, it does not make any changes to your computer. Instead, it is a stand-alone desktop application for Windows, that opens up a screen which look like an iPad user interface, but still working with your Windows files and applications only. iPadian is an open source project, which can be downloaded as a compressed file of 35Mb from Google Code.

Is iPadian a real iOS emulator for Windows PC

In the true sense, iPadian is not an iOS emulator. It just simulates iOS user interface on your Windows PC. It is desktop application developed using Adobe Air and is not a true emulator that allow you to run any iPad apps on Windows computer. You will not be able to play your iPad apps or access iTunes on your computer using this software. iPadian provides access to a virtual app store that gives the feeling you are using iOS app store but behind the scenes it is just a packaged set of apps that run on Windows. It has nothing to do with iOS.

Organize your Windows 8 desktop like iPad Home screen

I tried using iPadian on my Windows 8 computer and it seem to be a good option to organize the start screen of Windows 8 which many people do not prefer to use. Here is a screenshot from my Windows 8 laptop, which runs iPadian and shows the desktop shortcuts in a much better interface than the new Windows 8 start screen:

Access To The App Store

It is not possible to download apps from iTunes since iPhone, iPad and iPod apps are encrypted with Apples FairPlay DRM technology. What the guys at iPadian have done is to create a custom app store that currently contains slightly over 300 hundred popular apps, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Angry Birds, Cut The Rope and many more. They continue to add apps to the store based on user demand. The store has 8 app categories as the screen shot below shows.

Do The Apps Work?

Using Windows 7, I tested out a few of the apps in the custom store to see if they worked and found that the majority are fully functional. In addition to the browser and Gmail which are available in Windows, I tested out several other apps to see how they functioned.

Instagram

The iPadian Instagram app allows you to log into Instagram using the web-based API. Thus, while you can browse your photos, view/change your account details and manage authorized applications, you wont be able to upload any photos.

Spotify

Among the 34 music apps in the iPadian app store, Spotify is one of those that work very well.

Kik Messenger

The iPadian store currently has 21 networking apps and Kik Messenger is the the only messaging app that actually works.

Facebook & WhatsApp

However, much as I tried to use the Facebook app, it didnt work for me. The app gets stuck trying to connect to the server and always ends in a failed connection attempt. The custom WhatsApp app also has its fair share of issues. It actually isnt a real application. iPadian uses a free web interface to WhatsApp that allows you to send someone a free WhatsApp message right from your desktop. The service they use does not work.

System Requirements

The minimum specs to run iPadian on your Windows PC are:
  • Windows XP and above
  • The download file is 35 MB
  • At least 512 MB RAM but 1GB is recommended for best performance
  • You also need Adobe Air installed on your PC

Conclusion

iPadian is not an iOS emulator in the same way that Genymotion & Bluestacks emulates Android. We are yet to see a real emulator with access to Apples App Store. At the most, iPadian simulates the look and feel of an iOS device and at the least its like using iOS skins for Windows, with the added bonus of actually being able to use a couple of popular apps. But, despite this, it has no touch-screen support so you wont be able to use a touch-screen monitor on Windows 8. For now you are limited to point-and-click with the mouse.

Emulate iOS Safari browser in PC

If you just want to check how your website will look in a Safari browser in an iPad or iPhone, here is a better choice. Visit the website http://ipadpeek.com. Just type the url of the website you want to check and press ENTER. It will show how the specific website will be rendered in an iOS device.

Smartphone Bank App Security Problems

--
The benefit of Apple having a closed App Store is their scrutiny of all applications submitted. This has helped maintain a superior security record for the iPhone versus any Android phone. However, a big hole in Apple's vetting system has become evident whereby all smartphone users have been put in danger by poorly designed and coded banking applications. Thank you to the SANS Institute for bringing this issue to my attention on in SANS NewsBites Vol. 12 Num. 89:
--Security Flaws in Smartphone Banking Apps (November 5, 2010)
Researchers have found that several banking applications for Android and iPhone contain security flaws that store account information in plaintext. Attackers could potentially steal sensitive data by luring users to maliciously crafted websites designed to find the information. Of the seven applications inspected in the study, just one, from the Vanguard Group, did not store information in plaintext. The institutions were notified of the problems and reportedly have taken steps to fix the flaws.

http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/vulnerabilities/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=228200291
[Editor's Note (Pescatore): The Android phone world seems to be trying to compete with the iPhone by saying "Droid does anything - no restrictive App Store." The reality is that the Apple iPhone could actually compete by making the bar a bit higher for iPhone apps, to make sure that the apps don't do silly things like storing account info or passwords in the clear on the phone. I think users are very comfortable with "only" having 20 Tetris games to choose from if they know that none of the 20 are going to send their information to identity thieves.]
Dear Apple,

Please vet submitted Apps more thoroughly for security flaws. Much appreciated!

Dear Google,

'Anything goes' does not trump application security.

Firefox Add-On Security Alert! Mozilla Sniffer, CoolPreviews, Master Filer

--
Graham Cluley at Sophos.com has provided a great article at his blog about BAD Add-Ons for Firefox. The most recent is nasty spyware, another is infected with a spyware Trojan horse, and the last has a potentially dangerous security hole that could lead to PWNing your machine:

Mozilla pulls password-sniffing Firefox add-on

All of these Firefox Add-Ons have been blocked from distribution by Mozilla. But if you happen to have them laying around or have installed them: Kill them.

Mozilla Sniffer: It has been available since June 6, 2010. It spies on Internet passwords you enter in Firefox and sends them to nefarious fiends.

Master Filer: The infected version has been available since earlier in 2010. It is infected with the LdPinch Trojan horse, which also steals your Internet passwords and sends them to nefarious fiends.

CoolPreviews: Versions 1.0 through 3.0.1 have a demonstrated security vulnerability that could allow run malicious code on your computer. (Sounds like a typical buffer overflow problem). Proof-of-concept code has been created that demonstrates how to perform the hack. Therefore, it is critical to update to the latest version of CoolPreviews.

There have been other BAD Add-Ons as well, all of which Mozilla have blocked from distribution.

As a side note:

This same sort of problem has been plaguing the Android community whereby anyone can post anything as an application, including crapware and malware. As with Mozilla, Google have no formal system for approving or filtering bad software apart from reports from users. Therefore, it is likely that a number of people are going to be victims of BAD software before it is removed from distribution.

To be honest, this lack of formal software scrutiny system is what we are all used to in the general computer community. The best workarounds have been the use of websites like MacUpdate, VersionTracker, TuCows, MajorGeeks, etc., where either the site managers or other users have tried and rated the software.

For better or worse, Apple now use a formal scrutiny system at their App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. If you download a CrapApp onto your iOS device, you can point fingers at Apple for messing up. Microsoft have had a copycat scrutiny system for their Zune thing app store and plan the same thing for their Windows Phone 7ista OS thingies. Meanwhile, for all other devices, it is that mean old adage: Caveat emptor, IOW Downloader Beware.
